  • Alcohol caused the highest number of accidents in 1990, at 1,156 accidents and 589 accidents in 2001
  • Fatigue was the prevalent factor in 741 accidents in 1990 and 484 accidents in 2001
  • Illness reached its all-time high as an accident in 1987, causing 68 accidents and causing 40 accidents in 2001
  • Distraction by occupant caused the most accidents during the years 1990 and 1991 (90 accidents in both years) and caused 42 accidents in 2001
  • Drugs were the main cause of 30 accidents during the years 1988 and 2000 and caused 19 accidents in 2001
  • Legal medications caused the most accidents during the years 1993 and 1994 and caused nine accidents in 2001

In 2008, Hawaii ranked third in the nation for fatalities resulting from motorcycle accidents, setting a record of 32 fatalities. Underlying causes were speed related, along with right-of-way violations on the part of other drivers.
